Statement:

Because Missed Connections are products of chance that often take place in a café setting, I have chosen to explore this subject matter through ink drawings over coffee-stained doilies.  The role that memory plays in these fleeting moments is very interesting to me; sometimes every detail of a stranger can be captured in one’s mind, while other times, it is merely a general impression that becomes an embellished memory.  I decided to use coffee stains because I appreciate its accidental nature, creating shapes that have potential to become meaningful imagery.  The doilies serve as appropriate frames to these random occurrences—decorative borders on cheap material, making something seemingly trivial appear to be more special.
